Flashback! Madrid 2008; or, Messing Around in Boats

Photobucket

In the summer of 2008 I was living in Barcelona, but my boyfriend was working in Madrid. Normally he came back for the weekend, since we both had more friends in Barcelona and there were more things (for us) to do. Plus, sorry MadrileƱos, but Barcelona is just cooler... ; )

However, Madrid is certainly very cool too, and riding a paddle boat a few weeks back in Mexico City reminded me of a wonderful day we spent rowing boats around the artificial boats in el Parque de Buen Retiro, one of my favourite parks anywhere!

It was so much fun, though it did expose me a tiny bit to some of the unbelievable chauvinism that still exists in Spain. When we were getting into our boat, the man in charge indicated the passenger seat and snapped at me, "La mujer aquĆ"-- the woman goes here! I spluttered something that didn't make any sense but made sure I was the one who rowed the boat back in! And if you're thinking that perhaps it was a one off and that guy was just old... well, that night we went out for dinner, and were given a menu each... except that my menu didn't have any prices on it!

  2. Excellent photos. I am always attracted to water. Spaniards are male chauvinists. No doubt about it.

  3. Yeah, unfortunately that seems to be a common latin theme. I think they'll start to break out of the sexism soon...at least I hope. On another note, I'd LOVE to go to Spain!

  4. Found them on the street?!? Haha dang! I'm like living for the day where nice stuff are mine for the picking, but that's obviously not gonna happen. Lucky you!

Lol definitely going to make it a point to visit Spain soon too. It sounds like a cool (albeit strange) experience! Though that boating guy shouldn't have been snapping at you since they are so chauvinistic and all ey? Haha cool that you rowed back in though. Good for you! xD

PS Thanks for dropping by, I'm following you now! <3

  11. Good for you for rowing the boat back in! I love being out on the water (usually in a kayak), but sadly didn't get the chance to go this summer. Perhaps I can squeeze in some time for it before it gets too cold for such activities...

  16. ummm, so they have menus printed up WITHOUT prices specifically for women? Ya, that's just weird and seems like a big huge hassle.

  17. Now I really feel like rowing a boat! Don't ever think I've really done that before. Hmmm, thanks for the idea!
