gypsy swing

After a puzzling and lengthy trip to an area unserved by buses in South London, we arrived at a bar decked out a little like a trattoria, with a "tropical patio" which we avoided (erm, London ain't exactly tropical at this time of year). There was red wine (only available by the bottle--oh dear), tapas, and a band playing gypsy swing, in the style of Django Reinhardt. For those who don't know Django's style, check out the video below showcasing him and frequent musical partner Stephane Grappelli. My uncle bought me a Django CD when I was a teenagers, and I loved him from the sound of the first note. As though his lilting guitar solos weren't impressive enough, he played without the use of two fingers on his left hand, which were paralyzed in a fire.

The jam session that night weren't any competition for Django's ghost, but it was a fun evening nonetheless.

We look a bit like one of those couples who dress alike here, but I can assure you, we're not!

  8. That's exactly the type of pub I like! Very funny the comment about couples who dress alike, ha, ha. Some time ago, I asked you if you had seen the knife in Barri Gòtic in Barcelona. It's a knife in a part of a wall, then, legend has it, if you take the knife out, the whole Barri Gòtic would disappear. I'm sure if your boyfriend is from Barcelona, he'll show you where it is, I don't know the name of the spot, sorry!

  17. Well, I would have loved an evening like that! I love jazz, but I also like artists like Chet Atkins - so this is a nice mix. How very relaxing and wonderful. It looks like you had a lovely time! :-)

  18. @L: That be the enigma, sure. ; ) He said he doesn't want to appear too much on a fashion blog though.
@Carrie: It was pretty relaxing, though the journey was sure convoluted. Definitely a place to go with a car, rather than public transport!

  22. Emily--I love gypsy jazz. Several years ago we were in the Vancouver airport and heard a young Canadian played his violin. You might want to check out recordings (or YouTube) for Swingamajig. He was so talented, I tracked him down when we were safely back in Kansas.

  25. Hehe! Sometimes that happens to my bf and I. We dress in the same colours and then he goes to change :)

  26. yay, fun! any band with an upright bass and an accordian is allright in my book. also allright in my book: red wine by the bottle and breton stripes. sure, you may both be wearing stripes, but they're classic! it's allowed :) nice to finally put a face to the elusive albert! k and i often end up wearing the same colors and he is always the one who has to change, haha.

  27. ps yes, that was k in my oregon post (although he is now bearded). at that time he was wooing me ;)
