bloody weather

Something about the combination of slim jeans and ballet flats makes me go a bit ballet... but I never took ballet; hence my somewhat Highland dancer hands...

I've actually been in Germany a few weeks now, holed up in the attic writing my thesis, which is doing my head in and moaning about the weather, which is really depressing. Despite the frequent cold, wind and rain, I've been going out daily for my yoghurt ice-cream. And yeah, life has really been so exciting that that's all I have to say. And welcome to the debut of my "Fall 2011" wardrobe, bah.

Oh, one more thing. The statue I'm larking around on in half these pictures is in Bonn downtown, and we're basically sure it's a Chillida. Chillida was a Basque sculptor whose work I just love. There are lots of them in Barcelona, and of course in the Basque Country (which I visited in 2008). Anyway, just in case anyone was curious.

Wow, Eduardo Chillida. He is one of my favourite sculptor. He was Friend od Joan Miró (I think a painter you like).
Nice photographs.

i love how you're just dancing in the square without a care in the world :) and i freeze like a scared rabbit when someone drives past on a nearby road...

sorry to hear about your crummy weather! but at least you're not missing out on that lovely summer sun when you're holed up in the attic! ps i'm all about the scarves and cardigans during the fall. yours looks so cozy!

Love the combination of skinny jeans & ballet slippers, it's such a pretty/chic look. And yes, I also feel very ballet when I wear mine. You look adorable in these pictures and how fun that you've been in Germany, such a beautiful place. xo veronika

What are you writing your thesis on? For me, the best way to write was to cut myself off from the rest of the world for hours at a time. I would actually have Matt change the wifi password if I were working from home so I couldn't go on the Internet. You look lovely! The scarf is the perfect compliment to your stripes.

In response to your questions about Detroit, I have much to say about the current state of the city as well as the cultural interactions taking place. Here is a shortened form (which really isn't that short at all. sorry :-) :

Growing up in Oakland, I am accustomed to urban living and violence. However, I have never experienced anything like Detroit. Over the last decade, the population has decreased from 2 million people to 700,000. This is due to a loss of blue collar jobs in the auto industry as well as the current economic collapse. Buildings are abandoned and burnt down. Whole sections of the city no longer receive public services such as garbage and water due to the complete abandonment of neighborhoods. From an urban planning perspective, this speaks to the detriments of urban sprawl. I have read about the proposed planning for more green space and community gardens. I am 100 percent on board (I think the suburbs are terrible for America and deplete resources). But I wonder: where will the money for the proposed projects come from? Surely not from taxes because around half of the population is unemployed and seeking (often unsuccessfully) government assistance.

I have so much more to say :-) But I'll stop there!

Loving this outfit, but poo on the sucky weather, its okay when its one bad day so you can wear fun rain stuff but when it just keeps going its annoying!! But skinny jeans + ballet flats = perfection :)

Yep, its a 4 minute walk to the beach, its actually only a street over but we're on a dead end so we have to go up our street, over, and down XD

I may have to enlist my friends help for outfit pictures on the beach, but we have like opposite hours for work so I may need to take Mr Tripod :)

Cute outfit. Cute poses. And please stop denying that you're a jetsetter: every time I check, you're in a different country!!

@Shybiker: "Poverty jetset" as Douglas Coupland once defined it!

And if you think I've been in a lot of countries, just wait for my next several posts! Hehe

On the plus side if it was sunny and warm outside you wouldn't want to be writing your thesis! Is the end at least kinda nigh? Your outfit is lovely and I love the jazz hands in the first pic :)

Phew...thanks for your comment. It really relieved me...you know, I love your blog and I really like you, so just the thought was heart breaking for me. But now everything's ok, it was just a misunderstanding :) -and I admit I'm a little paranoid haha ^^
I love this outfit, the stripes, cardigan and fouland look beautiful together (I want to stole that cardigan!!), and all your poses are lovely :)

Lovely photos. I adore the casual beauty of the outfit. And I love how you look like you can have a lot of fun taking your photos instead of the typical serious face/poses!

Hehe, I love the ballet-inspired poses! And the location of course...what a beautiful fountain. You look great in those jeans and I like how the scarf works with the stripes. Good luck with your thesis! I kind of just wanted to turn my brain off for a year after I finished my master's thesis, even though when I was actually writing it, I was enjoying myself most of the time. The rest of the time I was freaking out about it hanging over my head.

@Natasha: I have to disagree... maybe perfect for mid-September. I'd rather be wearing shorts at the moment!

I always love your ballet poses! Reminds me of the post that brought me to your blog, the one with the pale pink/nude dress and brogues, somewhat ballet inspired <3 good luck with that son of a thesis!

I love these photos! They are so fun and your outfit is casual yet still so put together.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading jenny's response to you.

I've lived in the city of Detroit for sometime and just this month moved back home to Ohio before moving again. The city is in absolute ruins because of terrible politicians squandering money into their pockets... But the abandoned buildings allow for beautiful exploration and the parks that are there are wonderful to visit for picnics and the empty city is beautiful to bike in.

Los zapatos planos también me generan esa sensación de bailarina con lo que sea que los lleve :)
Me gusta mucho tu look, sobre todo porque lleva rayas!!!

I love your ballet poses! I remember very poorly trying them out myself when we met up, hehe.
Good luck with your thesis!

That skys have opened here also. Here, it has been pouring down for a week, and only today the sun came out. Btw, good combo with the jeans and the flats, something I could wear if I owned a pair of jeans.

This is a such a comfortable outfit! I love the color of that cardigan on you, and the way it kind of plays with the color of your hair, but maybe i'm just seeing things? haha. I always feel the need to do ballet stances whenever I wear simple black or creme flats, makes me want to point my feet out and prance around. Its funny how certain clothes or shoes or anything for that matter make you want to do certain things.

I hope your thesis is coming along great! It makes me think about the one i'll have to write in a years time...

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@Outofseasonface: My green hair! Indeed. ; ) THink I finally came to grips with my thesis this morning, but I wouldn't wish it on anyone. ; (

These photos are darling! I adore your oversized cardigan. It's such a lovely hue.

I would definitely wear that right now too! It is the perfect comfy outfit, skinny jeans, striped top, warm cardigan and ballet shoes :)
You look really lovely Em!

PS: I did ballet and your poses are quite lovely ;)

I love how casual and chic this outfit is. And I love your scarf and the color combo with the stripes and your cardigan. Your ballerina poses are so darling.

I'm jealous that you're in Germany right now! I lived there a few years ago and I really miss it!

Such a brilliant scarf :) You look great.

So odd how everyone is talking about autumn already. I guess I am totally out of tune with the educational seasons :D I'll just pretend summer carries on until first snow :P

You sure make a better ballerina than me. I was so impressive a ballerina as a toddler the teacher asked my parents not to bring me to class anymore hehe I guess my "enthusiasm" showed ;)

Monique said...

No way sweater weather already? You look fab anyway...so glad your giving your colorful ballet shoes some play time. Lovely pics

Norbyah said...

good luck with your thesis...hard to believe that the weather can be cold and drizzly there, while we're blistering in the sun and humidity here in hong kong. but, fall is slowly creeping it's way into the blogs i read. i LOVE your cardigan. and of course, ballet flats with skinny jeans is such a classic look. i'll have to wait until november before i can sport such a look.

I really like how you rolled up your jeans just a little. That's a look I may have to steal :)

Are you finishing your thesis for the school you were going to in England?

I was admiring that statue while simultaneously admiring your Fall wardrobe preview. Burgundy and mossy-olive green are beautiful together. I'm all for Fall as it's my favorite season, but I'm not quite ready to let go of the summer heat just yet. Anyway, the sculpture has really great movement. And whenever I see or hear the word 'Basque' I think of an article I read once about the Basque whaling at Red Bay, Labrador. Just one of those random things that's stuck with me for years and years...
