panses i figues i mel i mató

"raisins and figs and mel i mató"-- from a Catalan Christmas song

I try and have one non-work related outing per day, partly to keep myself sane and more productive, and partly because when I go out, I often tend to stumble across things that are actually helpful to my research. Also, I'm studying Barcelona's bike-share program, so anywhere I go on a bike is research, essentially. As my dad likes to say, "I'm always working!" ; D On this particular day I decided to make my morning coffee a bit more special by having a delicious Catalan desert, mel i mató, with it. Mató is a very soft, mild cheese (a bit the consistency of ricotta, maybe, but even milder), and typically it's served with honey. I'd had this years ago and thought "yeah, ok," and went back to eating churros at every opportunity, but I had a sudden craving, and went again this week. Delicious. The café/deli where I had it dates back to 1870, and there are so many delicious pastries and cheeses to be had that I might have to make this a more regular occurence.

Anyone coming to Barcelona can find Granja M. Viader here. Close to la Rambla, but crucially, not on it! And a nice flickr set showing the interior can be seen here.

Je, je. I sometimes used the expression mel i mató to express my love. :(

This "granja" is special fon a rain afternon in winter. A cup of hot chocolat with churros. :p

Yep, I've definitely eaten a LOT of churros there! But I felt that mel i mató was maybe a bit more summer appropriate! I am definitely going back soon. ; )

I love tiled floors, so unique and I love to find shapes and follow patterns, Mexico has a lot of tiled floors, did you get to see them?

Wow, mel i mató really does look/sound delicious. And to eat it in a 140 year old cafe is even better! The tiled floor is really lovely. I used to like to go to a general store/deli/cafe that was the oldest continually operated store in the US (established in 1770), but it recently closed. So sad.

Looking good in that dress! It has such pretty little details.

Emily,

Like ur poses and photos and dresses.

but most often u look down..u always give your face a downward inclination..why dont u try some other poses also..this is being typecasted..

Ha Tomz! You're quite right. I was even thinking about my chronic looking down earlier. You know why I do it though? I take a lot of my pictures in the morning, and I'm self-conscious about my puffy eyes. I actually take a variety of poses, but end of using the 'looking-down' ones!

Girl, be confident! I think you look absolutely beautiful in this outfit. Love the scarf and how it works with the dress. :D

Emily,

Awesome pictures. How many pictures do you take? Ever time I think of posting picture, I cannot find good ones...seems like I have already posted all good ones. But you keep coming up with 8 to 10 pictures every week......and most of them are very good....

It is easy to take one or two good pictures but consistently posting very good pictures is HARD.

Hi Emily,

Yes we lost touch. But we are back and will take it from where we left.
You look as cute as ever. Good to know about your bike research in barcelona.

your dress is cute as are shoes. I am not sure about this whole cheese with honey thing...does it taste like greek yogurt?

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@ Amber: A little bit, but the taste is not so strong.

Ooh yum! I have never heard of that before! I will have to put it on my 'to eat list' - it looks delicious!

I love your dress - the detail at the hem is adorable. I find that colour really difficult to wear. I am such a grub I always seem to stain light dresses - so am envious when others are able to manage them!

That last pic of you is so gorgeous! Love the colourful wall and your neutral clothing!

uy! suena delicioso!

this breakfast just looks delicious...

Oh the mel i mató looks so good nom nom nom! Here in Portugal some people eat goat's cheese with honey too.

And how funny we post wall pictures in the same day hehe! I think it's brilliant how it contrasts with the simplicity and neutral colours of your outfit. Did you take these by yourself??

PS: I've sent an e-mail to my friend, though she didn't reply to me yet, maybe because since this is a long weekend with bank holidays in Portugal she must have gone somewhere because she's always travelling. Anyway I've sent her the link to your post.

I love your skirt! I also love those tiles; they're so great:) xx

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@Raquel: I did take them myself. There was even a guy having a cigarette break right behind the tripod when I did. Major cringe when I realized! Haha, that's probably the other reason I'm looking down... to hide my blushes!

Beautiful. Love the dress and scarf. This whole combination provides a vintage vibe which I think is amazing.

That sounds totally delicious! Its great that you go and take some time outside, and at least you can sort of say its work. In your travels in Barcelona have you come across a bar called the Dow Jones? My friend was telling me about it (and its awesomeness). PSST, that braid in your hair is AWESOOOME!
