I know I'm the queen of the weekend break, but this one the week before Christmas was really exciting, even for me. I've been wanting to go to Berlin for about ten years, but it had so far never happened. This year I decided it simply had to.

True to form, we did almost no tourism at all, apart from a half-hearted trip to the Brandenburg Gate, and accidentally coming across the Berlin Wall (which holds not particular cachet for me; in fact I look on it quite cynically). What we did do is eat fabulous enormous German brunches with yummy German bread, visit posh Christmas markets to drown ourselves happily in mulled wine, and hang out with friends... Albert has a couple of friends he met in Bonn now living in Berlin, and I have a friend from London. It was the best way to experience the city in a weekend: a bit of traipsing about, a LOT of eating, and hearing the impressions of people who live in the city. I officially love the German capitol.

Prepare for a bit of photobombing... I couldn't think of any really logical way to split this post, since most pictures were taken on the first day.

Hat, scarf and coat all look great.

I spent a little time in Berlin and was really impressed at the imperial feeling of the city with the wide boulevards and monumental architecture. I hope you at least got to go the the Pergamon Museum. If not, put that on your list for next time, it's pretty cool.

Ah wunderbar! I've always wanted to go to Berlin but I haven't been to Germany for about 14 years now, I must go again before I lose all my language skills from lack of use! It looks like fun! I love it when you include photos of Albert, it's really nice! You look lovely in your tweed and tartan combo!

Happy Holidays Emily! Sorry I'm a little late to the game hehe! What an awesome trip to take, I can see why you wanted to go for so many years. I love Christmas markets, and wish we had some in the U.S. Unfortunately it's just mega malls over here ha! Have a happy new year, where ever you are :)

I've always wanted to go to Berlin (and Germany in general). Touristy stuff can be overrated and crowded -- I like that you guys marched to a different beat. Your photos are lovely, too. Love your beret! x

I love the fact that last time I looked you were in Bristol, and then, here are your images and recollections of a weekend in Berlin. Your zest for discovery of new places is inspiring. I have friends in Berlin and am hoping very much to visit next summer. Wishing you happy journeying for the new year.

Yes, yes, yes to your plaid scarf and jacket combo!

I'm glad you got to tick Berlin off your travel list. And, your photobomb posts are always among my favorites. You and Albert both have such a way of capturing the true pulse of the places you visit.
