winter sun

Photobucket

England in winter is best known for its "battleship grey" skies, but it was actually sunny for all seven hours of daylight, or whatever passes for a full day at this time of year, on Saturday in Bristol. I remember when I used to live in Glasgow years ago, being nonplussed when it was literally dark by 3pm in December. Of course, the flipside was that in June, traipsing your way home from a night out, it would be getting light at 4am before you've even made it home. One thing I really enjoy about having lived in a variety of places is the way that your sense of what's "normal" becomes warped and finally more flexible, whether it's to do with weather, food, languages, or hundreds of other little instances.

@ Kathryn: Yeah, this would be just after my 8 hour sleep and just before my 2 hour nap. Relaxation was the order of the weekend!

What's normal to the Londoners has now become normal to me. Like eating Heinz baked beans on potato. Oddly enough, I've embraced that. haha!

@Ashley: Sadly, after too long in the Mediterranean, I now find beans on toast kind of nasty. Which is a shame, because I used to love it. My English friend and I did succeed in Mediterraneanizing it for 7am post-clubbing breakfasts though, with the addition of avocado and parmesan! :D

1) those are the shoes to which I have referred to twice in my blog responses to you.
2) your HAIIIIRRRRRRRR. You look like a goddess of sunshine
3) socks with those shoes. BRILLIANT. doing it tomorrow.
4)It doesn't matter where I am, seasonal changes throw me for a total loop.

Kallie: I figured you meant these shoes. aka, the ones that you recognized when we went to the cobbler even though I didn't. ;)

I've been wearing socks with all my shoes all winter... I've been kind of hoping no one would notice, cos I'm just doing it from a cold feet point of view... but actually I like how it looks in these pictures!

Your hairstyle is amazing. I used to do this to my hair all the time and then forgot about it! I definitely think I need to bring it back...

I hate short winter days (how does Sweden do it?), and I do love your dress/skirt!

Emily, I see you and a little bit of sunshine is a great combo. I love these photos and your hair is so long. Your milk maid braids are beautiful, I love the side part in front. You really do look stunning lady.

You look lovely in red, Emily. I'd love a dose of that sunlight right about now and to be able to bask in it sans coat :)

oh goodness, i think I lived in Phx too long (until college) to think it's normal to get dark so early. glad you caught some sumlight that day on your visit, we def noticed the lack of it on our trip. you look wonderful in that dress & sweater, i'm really liking this color combo on you.
