bringing colour to january

It's so cold today! And by so cold I mean about 0 degrees, which I know is nothing compared to what some of you have. I checked the weather in my birthplace (Thunder Bay, Ontario) this morning, and it said it was -17 and snowing, so I can hardly complain. But it did snow a bit during my field trip, which was walking for two hours around Bloomsbury, looking at the old census maps of London done in the 19th century (yep, the same ones that had a colour category for "semi-criminal" streets) and seeing how the city had changed. It was über-fascinating, but absolutely freezing. And yes, I wore multiple sweaters.

***Edit: I mean 0 degrees celsius, etc. I'm Canadian, we use celsius, and I live in England, and they use it here too. Just since there seems to be some confusion. ; ) *** (and that's 32 degrees Fahrenheit) ; D

Anyway, January is a blah month that needs all the colour it can get. I picked up this blouse in the sales after Kings' Day (the Spanish present giving day on January 6th). My boyfriend talked me into it, since I seem to have developed a dislike in the last few years for floral blouses, but I'm really glad he did. I love the colours and the lace, and it gave my wardrobe a much-needed revitalization. And I love this skirt. It's one of those pieces that make me wonder what I wore before I owned it. Hmmm, it could probably use an iron, however.

What a cute outfit! I love your blouse!

And I so agree! I hate January! It is, in my opinion, the worst month of the year! And I, too, have been dragging out all my most colorful clothes. <3

Such a beautiful blouse. I adore the busy pattern and the black detail :)

The skirt is gorgeous too and such a great belt too - brilliant all around.

Too right January needs some colour in it. I've been trying to remind myself to put some white in the mix so I don't caue any seizures but it is so bland out there I feel like I have to make up for it :D

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@Shallow Mallow: haha, seizures are other people's problems! I personally love that I can always depend on you for a bit of colour, when the whole world seems to be turning slowly black and tan!

That shirt is really lovely! I love the pattern and colors.
January is really a "blah" month, so thankfully it's nearly February!

Oooh love the outfit!
And I wish the McQueen gowns were in the wearable section, haha... *sigh* if only I were famous and in need of gowns every night ;)

A nice jolt of colors! Just what I needed to see to wake up on this blahhh day. :) That blouse is sweet!

That blouse is gorgeous--your boyfriend has good taste (in more ways than one!)--and the skirt is perfect. you're right, we're definitely in the same region of the color spectrum today! i love old maps. when my boyfriend and i went to the vermont history expo (his choice) we got to look through really old books with maps of the differnt towns and it was really cool to see how our little main street in richmond (where we live) has been transformed over the years!

zero is cold enough! It's been in the teens and twenties here and I haven't stopped complaining!!

Your field trip sounds like a good time. I'm big on maps. When I was a kid I would look at atlases for fun. Kids are weird creatures, aren't they? ;)

There are so many things to love about this outfit. The lace detail on the blouse, the texture of the tights, the belt, and the boots (of course). I especially love how well proportioned it is.

I love love your blouse! The skirt is beautiful as well, the colour is very attractive.

Here is quite cold too. I'm begining to think of spring and sun.

Have a great day!

I read your first line and though - hey it is cold here today too! But that means 25 C. hmmm. hehe I guess everything is relative.

Love the new blouse - that print with that collar is brilliant.

january is truly a "blah" month. even if it's supposed to be the pinnacle of new beginings it's most likely my least favorite month. i love the colour combinations. the floral blouse is so prettty and the skirt has that equal pretty factor.

You've been to Mexico City??!! That's my most favorite place in the universe!!!♥

The blouse is beautiful. I love how colorful and pretty it is :)

Emily--I have just purchased my first red skirt and want to give you props on this one. I am shy of florals myself, but plan to challenge myself in that direction before the year is out. Admiring the belt.

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

Thanks Terri! I think you have a pretty similar belt yourself, don't you?

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

And Felicity: Yes indeed. I've been a few times to Mexico City, as I used to live in Puebla, and then in Guadalajara. Mexico is a great city!

You look so great Emily! Your right about color brightening up a January day :)

I always get mixed up between Celsius and Fahrenheit, but when they are both in the minus I know I'm in trouble..!

The red skirt is fab <3

I love this outfit, the floral shirt and the red skirt are so pretty and look so well combined. I actually bought a red skirt at Zara yesterday (yes, more Zara, but its corduroy and only €6 haha). And bought also a rust skirt, much influenced by my "colour" post.

On another note. How the hell can you wear only that in 0ºC?? I freeze when it gets to like 4 or 5 in my hometown. Its clear that I'll be wearing lots of clothes in London haha.

PS: I really like the shoes in this outfit too!

tierdear said...

I love how you styled those florals. I used to loathe overly floral, ultra feminine looks, but lately, I see all these girls styling them a little tougher. I will have to take inspiration from you! You're adorable.

@NRIGirl: I have absolutely no idea what plant that is, but given that it's growing in my garden, I'm guessing it's a weed...

I love these kinds of floral blouses which combine a lot of colours so that one can have endless styling options. This one is so pretty...love the black delicate border on the sleeved and collar.

It was -15 today and people were tobogganing in their snow suits while I was taking photos in my flimsy dress. It was a hilarious contrast.

Look forward to hearing from you
