in the shape of things to come
It was a pretty quiet New Years Eve, as we're new to this city and really don't know anyone... but I'm a fan of dressing up, staying in, and playing Clue in any case.
The dress I'm wearing was bought seven years ago, when I went to the Glasgow University Scottish Country Dance Club 50th Anniversary Ball (I studied an exchange year in Glasgow). I fell in love with the twenties shape and elaborate beading of the dress, though it weighs a tonne and was pretty impractical for a night of dancing.
I hope this outfit really will be the shape of things to come as I'm hoping to work in a few more '20s style shapes and styles into my look this year. I also enjoy that my New Years outfit was partly old (I've also had the shawl for many years), partly new (the glittery flats were a Christmas present) and partly self-made--the sparkly crown was a Christmas day project. Shona made one too, to go with her new dress!
I am kind of missing my '20s bob circa 2005 however. Here's a snapshot, at the ball with my friend who yes, was wearing a kilt (I have no information on whether he was wearing troosers, though);)
I miss my short hair!
Back in the present, we played with much hilarity:
and the usual panicking from Bonnie
I won! I'm wearing a handmade shawl from Maiwa, bought back when I worked on Granville Island in Vancouver, oh, a hundred years ago...
(never mind the tripod)
dress: gift circa 2005, shawl: Maiwa, shoes: gift, crown: DIY

The dress is gorgeous. I know around the time of my daughter's wedding I had considered cutting my hair and adding a curly perm. I like your hair long, but it looks cute in the short version too.
Love 'em!
Gorgeous dress!

What a great little dress! I didn't get the chance to dress up for New Year's (boyfriend was down with the flu) so I've been living vicariously through other people's outfit posts...I must say, yours is definitely my favorite so far!
Looks like a fun night! Happy 2012!
That dress is gorgeous! What a beautiful dress to keep through the years x

SO even after reading your post in still laughing at your "semi-hipster" comment on April, Maybe.

Emily, I don't know whether to call your dress gorgeous or exquisite... or both! I love how your glittery crown and shoes accent all the bead work. You wear this '20s silhouette very well. And, you look(ed) great with a bob! Have you given thought to bringing it back?
We spent a quiet evening in on New Year's Eve as well. Good company, good food - that's really all you need. Although, at one point my aunt did remark on how it would've been fun to play boardgames. I hadn't thought to bring any... perhaps next year!
the stars in your hair look awesome!
xx, Sabinna and David
your dress is just... indescribable. it's so pretty, i think you literally took my breath away!
Beautiful dresses! and adorable dog : )
beautiful flapper dress, it looks gorgeous on you. And I love your short bob! Don't you just hate how we can't snap our fingers and have a different haircut each day? POO
That has to be the best dress I've seen this holidays. Seriously gorgeous! And your star headbands are great too.
I hate going out in New Year's so your quiet plan sounds perfect to me :)
you both look wonderful
Hello there! I popped over from Tammy's blog (intrigued by the name!!!) and I'm so glad I did!!! What a wonderful dress!!!! You look beautiful. I love the headbands too- where do they come from????? I'd love to buy one like that!!!
Love the flapper dress! Is your sister as interested in traveling as you are?

That dress is amazing, and I love the star crowns! This looks like an excellent New Year's Eve to me. I need to get a Clue game. I used to play it all the time with my siblings, and I even made my own version with my family members as the suspects drawn in a horrible Napoleon Dynamite-esque style.
Looks like such a good time! I'm totally in the mood to play Clue now. Board games are the best. I would love to play with you two, especially in such beautiful dresses!
XOXO
Gorgeous look. The dress is so stunning.
Emily hola, mui lindo, hermoso, su vestido...amei, amei mucho...
Besos rose jp
@Heather: Haha, that's awesome! Why did I never think to do that? : )
Beautiful dress! Is Bonnie an Irish Setter?? If so I have always had Irish Setters! :)
@Cathryn: She is! She's pretty old now, but Irish Setters are beautiful when they're young, aren't they? And such nice personalities. : )
Your dress is absolutely amazing! Perfect for NYE :)
