in search of the hound of the baskervilles
"The road in front of us grew bleaker and wilder over huge russet and olive slopes, sprinkled with giant boulders." The Hound of the Baskervilles.
This isn't much of an outfit, but I couldn't not share these photos, because Dartmoor may have been my favourite place of all the ones we visited in the South West. I'm not sure what it is with me and wild, inhospitible landscapes... well, I guess it's growing up with frequent visits to the North Yorkshire moors. I loved Dartmoor just as much, maybe even more. It didn't have the pure expanse of riotous purple heather, but it did have enormous craggy rocks that pitched up against the sky, and were perfect for climbing a la Famous Five. Hikers with dogs and picnics tripped across the uneven ground amid the purple heather, golden gorse and rough, serrated bracken and a blast of wind sent great clouds across the sky, dousing the land in sunshine one moment, and throwing it into gloom the next.
And of course, having spent my youth obsessively reading Sherlock Holmes, I kept an eye firmly open for the hound of the Baskervilles. I fancied I saw a great black dog at one point, but it turned out to be a horse. I should probably wear my glasses once in a while.
I was as happy as this the whole time:

Long live the Hound!! From one Sherlock Holmes fan, to another. :-) By the way, have you watch the "Sherlock" series on the BBC? Did you see the "Hound" version?? Thoughts??
Awoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Bays at the moon!)

@Carrie: I quite like the Sherlock series, although I think the first season was better than the second. The Baskerville one was pretty good, not as good as the Final Problem, but way better than the Scandal in Belgravia... I don't know why filmmakers always need to abuse the Irene Adler storyline...
Haha, I was going to ask if you've seen BBC's Sherlock :) I admit, I cried during the Reichenbach Fall...anyway, what a gorgeous location for photos!

It's beautiful landscape...explaining some of the physical descriptions I've read in books. Had to laugh at the comment about going without glasses--I once mistook a chicken for a dog!
what an amazing landscape. i'm always humbled by rugged views like these where nature isn't exactly "pretty" but just very powerful.
Wow, that's beautiful! I'd love to be surrounded by a landscape like that!

I really love this landscape. And I think you like it as much as you do because it reflects your personality (I gather that you're a feisty one).
so pretty.. :)

Wow it looks so beautiful. I can almost taste the fresh air. That last photo of you is extremely pretty too & it puts such a smile on my face! :]
@Emily - could no agree more re: Adler handling. {Sigh} That was actually the episode that I came in on with the series, so I'm glad they are doing another season.
Beautiful photos! You look so at peace!

Having recently read The Hound of the Baskervilles, I couldn't help but smile while reading through this post. I'm glad you had such a nice time! Dartmoor looks just like I imagined it.
