old traditions for new people

Photobucket

I think I've probably mentioned my love for vermut (vermouth) the weekend pre-lunch aperitif that I discovered last year was a mainstay of Iberian culture. What I like about it, apart from the vermut itself, is the social aspect, the gathering and having a drink with friends or family in a leisurely fashion, chatting and letting the day unravel before you. I just hadn't had the full experience before.

Some friends started a semi-regular vermut Sunday event, and after the first session I'm a fan. It makes me feel like a local (and we all know how much I like that). I got to have a reason to dress nicely on a Sunday, somewhere to take my new book, and to sit in the sun in January and, well, watch people drink vermut, since I was on a bit of a drinking ban at the time. Happily, that's been lifted so I think I may enjoy this coming Sunday even more!

There were also patatas bravas

and even polaroids! But unfortunately I had to delete that picture because my former friend is bipolar and can't be happy unless she's controlling and manipulating other people...

I primarily used to like vermouth in Manhattans. This seems more wholesome!

@Dusana: let´s say European, to be on the safe side ;)

@ Gordianus: altogether more relaxing than cocktails, I find. It´s definitely more about the socializing than the drinking--well, a good mix of both maybe.

How do you have wooden polaroids! Too cool for school.

That looks like a helluva lot of fun! Sunday drinking is always an A+.

How lovely! I've never heard of this before, but I suppose it kind of reminds me of Sunday brunch. I love sitting in the sun during winter...it makes the sun more of a friend than a foe - like it is during the summer months.

This is so funny, I just heard about this for the first time yesterday! I went out for tapas with a few people for an intercambio- I'm studying abroad in Segovia- and one of the local girls was telling us about vermut. Interesting!!

@Kallie: the wooden polaroids... I think my friend Anna buys them on ebay (she's the one with the polaroid camera). I think it works out to like a Euro a photo for film though!

I have been too much of a homebody for much of the last year. I think it would be nice to start branching out and partaking in new-to-me traditions... something both fun and relaxing as this appears to be.
