the grass is always greener...
The weather has been incredible in London today, 22 C (or 72F) and sunny--so obviously I've been stuck inside packing all day. It's moving time again. I'm not leaving London for good yet, but I am leaving my flat, which is overpriced, has too many people in it, and is generally getting me down. Looking back at these pictures, I can't help but wish I lived in New York instead (although I'm sure real estate is equally outrageous there as here). I have a real commitment problem with places, which is shared by a lot of my family. I'd always rather be somewhere else: I was longing to come to London before I did, but now it bores me a bit. I know it's because I don't take enough advantage of what's on offer, but again; with rent and transportation so outlandishly expensive, constantly going out is unaffordable. And people are (no offense, Londoners) unfriendly. I remember walking home one day in a blue funk after being ignored by some people from my course thinking, "wtf? I'm friendly, social, intelligent, can speak English and am reasonably good looking, ... isn't that what people supposedly want in friends?" Pfff.
Anyway, grousing aside, here are some pictures from über-friendly new york. I had a nice day about fifty times over, and while I think we barely scratched the surface of that city, I really want to have the chance to scratch it some more.
Meanwhile, I'm off to a place I wouldn't trade for any metropoles on offer... my Dad's hometown in the North of England!
The cartoon is from a Will Eisner exhibit at the museum of comics.
Some Chinese elders were really involved in whatever this was about.

I know what you mean about London being overpriced. I am from a town in the communter belt about 25 min away from Liverpool Street. My best friend moved to South London a few years ago but recently came back home because of the pricing. She didnt know the point of living in London if you didnt have the money to do anything and take advantage of what was on offer. She was working all the hours under the sun in order to pay her bills. She lived in Peckham so not the nicest place, cant imagine how much it would be if she moved more central!

Wonderful pics dear! I'm not even getting into the prices issue.... I'm greek (that sums it up pretty much...ha!). Kisses :)
I'm from NY and it is the most awesome place ever. Unfortunately, I'm in the process of moving to NJ. Ew. But oh well. Only a bridge and tunnel away haha. I love all of these pictures. Especially the awesome Bat man sticker. I'm like the biggest NONtraveler on earth. I've never been to another country, but would love to go to England. Even if no one in London is friendly =p
Love your photos of NY :) Agree with you London - lived a few months there and the prices were so shocking to me!

Great NY photos. I can bet that living in London is tough- that city is so expensive! I still really want to live there though. :D
Have fun at your Dad's!
I'd always rather be somewhere else as well. I'm walk by prince and mercer everyday!

I think I have what you have: the grass is greener disease. haha.
Give Yorkshire a GREAT BIG hello for me! :)
I will get there someday.
Nice round-up of NYC photos. I especially like the one of the woman at the produce stall. All those colors! And she looks so happy.
Good luck with your flat move.
And here we are in NY dreaming about London...
Glad to know you are safely back.
NY definitely is magical! Although I've dreamt of living there my whole life, I'm pretty sure things are as glamorous as hollywood make them see, but one can dream! Amazing pictures, loved the Batman sticker!

These pics make me miss NY, it is a city like no other
My experience with Brits (can't speak for Londoner's specifically) is that I've finally found a group of people who are like me. Haha! My sister-in-law is British and we get along swimmingly - no need for touchy-feely small talk. Say what needs to be said and then move along. Anyway, I'm glad you had a good experience in NYC - and yes, the price of real estate there is horrible as well. I laughed at the title of your post because I'm having to remind myself a lot these days that the grass is greener and I need to learn some contentment...but I also keep asking the hubby, "Aren't you ready to go somewhere new? Let's just move." Or at least go on a road trip. Enjoy your new digs!
Good luck with moving!
You're making me want to move to NY! People are nice enough in my outer London suburb but, you're right, the closer you get to centre the more rude people seem to become!
i would love to live in NYC and London!
hopefully i win the lottery soon!! :)
love all the pictures..
good luck with the move.
xoox
Love the pics. Keep 'em coming! :)
oh yes I agree- London might be really pretty but I really cannot get used to life there- except if you have an average Londoner's salary which is much much much better than my student budget!
and all these long distances to get where you want...
Some excellent photos. How often does this wanderlust hit you?
youre moving again!? i love your traveling spirit even if its within the city!! i would love to live in new york too and i totally second your idea ;) i bet you would do so well. good luck with your move girl xo

Sorry to hear the packing is upon you! Hope it goes quickly.
I DEFINITELY understand always wanting to live somewhere other than where you are... it's definitely part of the story of my life.
Those pictures are fantastic. I want to be a photog like you when I "grow up".
Leaving the House in THIS?!?!
@Diana: Oh, trust me, I'd rather not be moving within the city, but this place was getting pretty annoying. Although I'm a bit sad now that I realize I have not one, but two ukalele-playing flatmates!
Good luck with your move lady and have a great time in your dad's hometown. Lovely pics. I'm really glad you like NYC, people really are super friendly people are more than willing to offer directions weather they know them or not ha. Much love to you lady hope you love your new flat!
P.S. your awesome
@Monique: Haha, true! And I did have a bit of a tussle with a subway lady who was sure she knew what I wanted... even though I wanted something different. ; )
Gorgeous pictures! Are these taken with the new camera? I almost thought the pic with the dragon fruit was taken in Asia! Was that taken in China Town or something?

Beautiful photographs! I love seeing photos of cities!

i have such a commitment problem with places, too. i ALWAYS want to go somewhere else. even when i AM somewhere else. however, i do think your enjoyment of a place is completely dependent on the people you share that place with--i was always happy when i lived in boston because i had such great friends there. it sucks when people seem to be randomly unfriendly (i can pretty shy when i am completely alone in the world, which makes it especially difficult). i hope that moving to a new flat will shake london up for you and subdue your wanderlust for a little longer :)
londoners may not be terribly friendly, but new yorkers are not known for being particularly pleasant, either! you must have caught them on a good day :) irish people are the nicest, in my experience!
these photos are lovely
Maybe the people in your course are intimidated by you because you come off as way more awesome then them. That was the reasoning I used when I was in college since I didn't make many friends (transfer student who didn't live on campus, a winning combination)--people just couldn't handle my essence ;)
People can be very stupid, the other day Daniela was completely ignored 3 times by different people at a cafe and all she wanted was a brownie. But I guess that happens everywhere. I also get really annoyed about the ridiculous expensive transport costs but in the end I am just loving to be here, and now even more with this lovely weather. Hope you come back soon though or I'll really miss our "get togethers".
But what I really wanted to say is that I love this pictures, and note the jealousy here :P
There is no perfect situation in life!
