in the attic

How can I follow last post's yellow dress? Well, I can't really, so I won't try. I've been thinking how the blog somewhat misrepresents how I dress anyway. I do of course wear dresses pretty often, but really, I work from home, and I'm quite happy to wear the same thing (ie. this) for three days in a row. Kallie and I were talking about this when we met; sometimes, despite being style bloggers, style is really not top of the agenda. She responded with this post. Nicole talked about some of the same things last week here. Consider this my entry into "reality check wear!" Because life doesn't take place in a field of flowers every day.

In fact, it takes place in an attic, at least in Bonn, where I carved out a cozy nook for myself with my wonderful Day of the Dead cushions (bought at Spitalfield's Market in London; they make me so happy), and some co-ordinating flowers from my lovely boyfriend. And I proceeded to catch up on my journal, and then read a bit of Steinbeck (currently The Grapes of Wrath), conveniently forgot that I should really be researching, and gazed out the window.

***Edit*** Hey guys, I'm enjoying the spontaneous links to your own non-dressy looks. Keep them coming!

Haha! I'm the same! I've only done one "casual" post so far: http://www.takeonlymemories.com/2011/05/walk-in-park.html
but I actually wear simple things quite a lot. I have to say though that since starting the blog I've been a lot better about "dressing up"! I'm quite happy about it cause I can look pretty awful ;)

This outfit is simple and perfect for working/studying etc. I think that no one really dresses up EVERY DAY. Sometimes it's just good to wear simple clothes and not to worry about how we look.
I, for example, dress like this when I don't want to dress up:

hahahh! my addition: http://stripedsocksplaypingpong.blogspot.com/2011_03_08_archive.html but seriously, I do not think anyone has high expectations from my style!
and btw, you flat is so cosyyyy!i love the couch!and is sb playing the guitar? :)

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@Penny: My boyfriend plays the guitar. There are two in the flat, one of which I've carried to four countries so far. Which pretty much entitles me to some photoshoots, doesn't it Albs? ; D

Of course we have our favourite outfits, but when I lay around the house in jeans or cut-offs and a t-shirt I feel nice too, so why not show it? Of course most of times we show our best in our blogs but, as I said in Nicole's blog, sometimes you just need to keep it real. And your real is quite nice too! So why worry ;)

I love your hair length now! it's a bit longer and the fringe too. I am most probably to cut mine again since the result wasn't quite what I expected.

Oh and nice to peek a bit into the attic ;)

You look comfortably cozy - some of my favorite "fashion". :-) Looks like you've carved out a nice spot for yourself. And P.S. the words "attic room" give me a little thrill. :-)

When it comes to lounging at home nothing beats a nighty :D

You look lovely even if you're overdressed ;)

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@Raquel: Yeah, I'm glad my fringe has grown. It was definitely a bit short (and uneven) right after I cut it!

@Stef: Hehe, true!

I totally agree! It's very refreshing to read this; though eternal sequins and vintage headdresses can be splendid, some days it feels just nicer to wear no make up and a old cardie (like.. umm, today!)

I have the same thing with writing a sock/shoe blog - sometimes friends stare incredulously at my feet and say "but you're not even WEARING socks!"

Shybiker said...

It's nice to see the whole person of a blogger and this post has a refreshing candor to it.

Of course nobody dresses up every day. I've found, though, that even on the most casual days, stylish people look good 'cause they make stylish choices even among the lowliest of clothes. For example, I don't think the bottom of your jeans rolled themselves up... it's a small touch but a nice one.

Loving the candian tuxedo look! very comfy, yet chic. This is an interesting topic (going to check your friend's link out shortly), some people say post only 'good' outfits, others say post everything. This is something I'm wondering about right now.

Personally I enjoy seeing outfits every day (even if its pjs, seriously!) if it's the type of blog where the person shares a bit about themselves and you have a glimpse into their overall life. It just adds to things.

but maybe that's just me?!

@Emmett Katherine:
Interesting! I always forget this is called a "Canadian Tuxedo" because to me double denim is such an American look...

I don't post every day, and I prefer to post when I'm looking good. It's less about the clothes on other days, and more about my patchy skin/greasy hair or whatever. I think there's a difference between casual and sloppy. I like seeing people's casual looks, but I'm not really into seeing people when they've clearly made no effort/are just staying around the home. I mean, I see no problem with them doing that, but I guess I visit blogs to get inspiration of how I can dress well, so I'd rather not see people in their pyjamas. But I see your point.

Whether is that beautiful yellow dress or this cute denim or denim outfit, is always great to read you, hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I totally understand! I work from home to and in the Winter it's SO hard to get all dolled up, and now that Summer is here I feel like I'm way over dressed, considering I'm by myself all day. But then by cocktail hour it means I'm already ready to go meet the friends, so I'm thinking its ok.

You look lovely in casual, and the memory of the yellow dress lingers on...

Hah! I agree with you 100%, and I applaud you for including one of your casual "day off" looks. I happen to think you still look extremely put-together.

Hehe there'd be a lot of pjs and giant cardi's on my blog if I posted every day! V true tho, I tend to only post my more interesting outfits, but may try some casualwear in future :)

Amber said...

I tend to wear causal outfits like this through the week but when Friday comes around I like to fancy it up a bit. Nice to see that other bloggers are the same way.

true story: im wearing the same outfit as you almost. your bangs look really pretty.
ps--i LOVE that one pic on the tumblr from vancouver. now thats the kind of rioting i respect ;)

Obviously I agree with you on what you've said here :)
It's funny, I make such a fit about posting my own casual outfits, but I love seeing those of other bloggers. This is a really great casual look. I've been wanting to try double denim out for a while, but haven't gotten around to it just yet. Must get on that!

Even though this is your non-fashiony look I love it!!
Weekends for me are times when I don't care what I wear. If I don't go out I stay in my PJs all weekend and I looove it, haha :D

Anything in the first two weeks of June from Rags fits the bill here. I work from home in the summer time. So, what do you think of the Grapes of Wrath?

maggeygrace said...

I had to scroll to your previous post to see what this talk of your yellow dress was about- and oh my! It was lovely. You radiant little gem, you! I love these pictures, too! your pillows are awesome.

Style doesn't always have to be about looking great, feeling great is just as important - pyjama/lazy dress days are amazing, no one can deny it!

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@Katie: but I also look great, obviously! ; D hehe.

@Terri: I love the Grapes of Wrath. I could do without the poetic bits in between chapters, but I'm enjoying the actual story,

I really like this post! It's nice to see how people really live lol

I think posts like this one are just as relevant on a blog with a lot of fashion content as a perfectly put together outfit! Plus, you look fantastic:) xx

@Emily: it entitles you to play it

These are really lovely photos. It's always fun to see my favorite bloggers in everyday wear. I should do one of these posts soon! Hope you're enjoying Grapes of Wrath. I love that book.

This is such an honest, raw post. You look great. I think you've inspired me to do a "reality check" post!

Sometimes my "stay in" outfits are a bit scary haha.

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@Velvet: Mine too. This would be a fairly socially acceptable "staying in" outfit! ; )

Ashley said...

You really don't have to remind us that style is not at the top of your agenda.

Sure, I love seeing pretty things, but I always come back to your blog because I really love what you have to say. You're truly "Smarter than the average bear," or something like that ;)

Keep on posting :D

I'm a huge fan of this type of androgynous, timeless outfit so I wouldn't mind seeing more of this on the blog :) you look stunning! also REALLY in love with that hair of yours. I feel the need to get bangs :(

I love this post! I don't think I have yet to do a real casual non-dressy everyday wear kind of post, a 'lifestyle look" if you will. I always feel like no one will bother looking at it or reading it, but looking at this post, I actually really enjoy this look you've posted, despite that(or really, because) it's more of an "everyday" kind of look. I think you've inspired to me to post my lifestyle looks more often!

The attic nook certainly looks cozy and I love the lighting in these photos. It really emphasizes the laid back feel that the other elements in the photos depict. And speaking of laid back, sometimes even the simplest of casual dresses have nothing on jeans and a comfy shirt.

Abi said...

Constant dress up is most definitely an unrealistic ideal. Even the most stylish I'm sure yearns for those days in nothing but cozy trousers and a tee lazing around on the couch. It'll be a little funny to get dolled up just to sit at home or do house chores.

I love your cushions. Adds a nice touch of summer to your flat for sure!

how amazing.
I love the stay in clothes.
But they don't look amazing like this.
Beautiful blog.

I have recently finished my exams and spent most of those couple of weeks in trackies, hoodies and uggboots. In the end I just didn't do outfit posts for those weeks. This post makes me think I should have as my blog is about what goes on in my life!

I think it's great posting pictures of your normal wear! I know I ride my bike a lot to work and what not, and sometimes theres no way I'm going to wear a skirt, I also have a men's roadbike so the bar poses some problems! But I often post more casual outfits because I'm not going to lie, if I like a casual outfit a reader may too!

Speaking as someone who lives and dies by fashion but usually wears the same things many days in a row and NEVER wears shoes unless I have to (i mean, hell, i AM from Kentucky...)I think that focusing all of your time and energy into what you're wearing is totally missing the point. It's about feeling good, being free, and putting together what you like. As you say, we can't all be wearing bright dresses in fields of flowers every day, and I know we'd all be bored to tears if that was the case.
