beach!

Complete lack of originality in that title, but I just got back from another weekend (definitely not at the beach, though extremely wet) and am pretty much asleep on my feet!

So, here I am at the Barcelona beach, which tends to be somewhat maligned by locals. They prefer taking trains up or down the coast to visit the beaches in small towns where there are far fewer tourists. I'm all for that as well (see this post) but I also think there's a lot to be said for being able to ride your bike to the beach in twenty minutes! I've included a few pictures from an earlier day, when there were all sorts of creative kite displays happening. Three men in identical black outfits were controlling those black kites, making them do flips and fly in formation, while the octopus was just chilling in the deep blue sky. I chilled in my fruit print (!!) dress, my only purchase from the sales (I'm incapable of resisting a good novelty print).

Welcome to all the new eyeballs around here, and please feel free to introduce yourselves. I'll try to get back to you all after a good night's sleep!

P.S. I've been hearing those seasonable grumbles from bloggers to the effect of "I can't wait for fall so I can wear tights again." To which I say... you must be kidding... tights? Fall? I love Fall, but Summer is short enough as it is without wishing it away!

I love a good novelty print too. Also I quite agree about the weather. It was crazy hot in London last week but we only get about 2 weeks of summer, so bare legs for a bit longer please. Three guys controlling those kites is so impressive!

That print is super darling. I love it! It reminds me of my tea towel at home. And I'll be the first to admit that I bitch about the hot summer, but I live in the humid south of the US right near a bay and it's just gross. Fall for us is really more like summer in the northern parts of Europe. Highs in the lower 80s and lows in the 50s. Perfect.

I love the fruit print! It's playful and adorable.
I certainly grumble about summer quite a lot, but only because it can get in the high 90s for days here! Somehow summer in California isn't so bad this year however; but I do feel bad for the South and east coast of America--it sounds dreadfully hot & humid, and if I were there I would certainly be dreaming of fall.

if your dress is covered in a fruit print, I classify that as you must get it. gorgeous scenery, the kites are a charming detail to the day. I know when people blog about wanting fall, in my comments I normally agree, but truly summer is great and I don't want to see it go (I say this because I'm in an air conditioned room)

sounds like a great weekend! I love your shoes!

The print of that dress so fun. I've never seen anything like it, and I'd jump on the opportunity to own such a unique print. I have to admit that I have the Fall blues and am wishing the summer away!

Such a pretty print. I get disgruntled by such complaints too...the only real difference between summer and winter in Ireland is often that you can just wear one pair of tights at a time instead of two :)

Ooh, great summer dress and cool kite photos! Touristy or not, that looks like a lovely beach. This week I'm going to Santa Monica, which is extremely touristy and busy...but only a mile and half walk from my friend's apartment, so it's fine with me!

I too cannot resist a good novelty print! Such a cute dress. As someone who is curled up on the couch, in front of a heater, in woolen pyjamas with a cup of tea right now, I implore other bloggers to enjoy summer! I cannot WAIT to be able to go to the beach and sit outside reading a book and go out without worrying about whether I need to pack a raincoat!

i'm in agreement with all above. i love the dress. but i really, really love those shoes. awesome. and, i think i might wear my hair up in braids today, too.

A perfect ensemble for the beach, I'm liking the breezy cut of your dress and your shoes are darling. Did you fly kites? I've always wanted an animal-shaped kite!

Lovely fruit print. And I got to say I do not like fall at all, but I am longing for the winter, which here comes in october. I am so not a summer person!

Eleni said...

Well, I live in England and we just wish the weather would make up it's mind! It was raining and cold this morning, but now the sun's come out...bare legs last week, winter rain coat this week...but hey, if we Brits didn't have the weather to complain about, whatever else would we talk about?!

I agree. While each season has its appeal, we should savor the one we have right now rather than wish for the next one.

I am so jealous! It looks incredible.
Usually I love autumn and I am always looking forward to it because the leaves and everything are so beautiful. But since we didn't have a summer this year I really don't want it to cool down more!

you do always manage to find the most unique and cute prints. This dress is no exception. I really like the cut of it as well...definitely a keeper

That print is so amazing. The beach looks lovely! What a fun day!

I really love your outfit here - I can be an awful sucker for a novelty print too, and that one is great! And a Yorkshire Tea tote! Where on earth did you find that? (I happen to be drinking a cup of Yorkshire Tea as I type!)

Jenny said...

I am in love with that picture of those kites! It is the epitome of summer- blue skies and little white clouds. Loving the dress and sandals. And no to tights! I don't want summer to end. xx

haha! i was thinking about fall the other day & had to stop myself. i was like "hold on, summer isn't long enough, i hate wearing layers, i always end up too hot!" so i'm with you on soaking up all the summer we can!

ah, beaches. haven't even been yet this year, so sad :( you look happy & very summery in that outfit :)

Ashley said...

Agreed. I'm too in love with summer to wish for fall. But maybe that's because it never got deathly hot in San Diego :)

Stylin' at the beach!

Sweet print on that dress :) ahh no, I'm not really looking forward to tights coming back either! I rather liked Barca beach when I went, but I can imagine hidden deserted littles beaches are more fun. xx

Annebeth said...

we've only really had fall over here so I am not at all ready for fall. In fact, thinking about fall makes me really angry :(

you look lovely, I expected the barcelona beach to be a lot more crowded!

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@Rachel: I think the little beaches of the Costa Brava are supposed to be lovely, the ones just up the coast are kind of the same though but pebbly... and less crowded.

@Annebeth: Yeah, I think tourism is down this year; it definitely used to be way worse!

Xavi said...

Ja, ja, this beach is made from artifficial sand... prhaphs this is one of the goal for not going to Barcelona beach :p
It's funny. Fist photograph is taken almost in front wher I'm working.

Ha! I could have come and said hello (although this was the weekend).

I don't mind the artificial sand, at least it is not big rocks like farther up the coast! Also, it's real sand I think, they just bring it in from the ocean. But it is very sparkly!

Fruit print is wonderful! What a fun way to brighten up one's day :)
I enjoy your use of tote bags :) really there is sometimes no substitute for the good old cotton tote!
You're making me miss the beach!
Oh and glad to hear the Canadians can try their hand at civil disobedience too ;)

I just wrote the longest comment and it wasn't able to process... darn!

The essence of it was: this dress is amazing, you are gorgeous and those kites are too cool! Summer rocks and the fact that I have to wear thighs half the time these days because it's getting colder by the minute here in Canada is definitely not exciting me!

At least I've got your posts to keep me warm!

Virginie ♥

Courtney said...

No tights for me, thank you. I prefer bare legs. I miss the ocean. I also miss Spain.

Raquel said...

Packed with tourists or not, at least you have a beach! :) I only have a not that bad London but no beach for me. But I can quite understand people that long for tights! I don't even have time to pamper my legs (which means getting rid of hair!) so skirts are kind of difficult now! Gladly I'll start longer shifts next week, which means more days of per week yay! And has they give us a heatwave I might wet my toes in some park water (or not haha) but I wish I had a tropical dress, or anything really, to go with this heat supposed to come!
You look lovely!

So are you staying in BCN the whole summer or will we be able to see a but of your Canada too? ;)

PS: I see that you got something from Mango that fits! ;)

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys said...

@Raquel: I'm in Germany at the moment actually, but I'm going to Canada really soon. : )

And this dress is actually kind of too big... but the smaller one was too small. To I have to take the shoulders in a bit when I get home! Stupid Mango!

Anonymous said...

Hear, hear! It makes me smile to think my double layers of tights are making bloggers in the sun long for autumn while I look at their blogs envious of the heat :) If we get those visas we're definitely going some place with "real" summer :)

Ah, lovely, colorful and summery! And what is it about kites that makes them so much fun to photograph?
