port dover
I shudder to think what a golden glow might be
Last post from Canada! (tear). My last week there, my dad and one of my sisters and I went to Port Dover, a fishing village on Lake Erie. There's not much to do there, but we did what there was... wander around and enjoy the atmosphere, and ponder the eternal strangeness that is small towns, the terminally ten years out of date music blaring from the shops, the decision as to which fish restaurant to eat at. It's an interesting thing being part of a blog community that loves vintage and nostalgia and fifties. When I hang around with my family, my parents, who were children in the fifties, aren't the least bit nostalgic. "The restaurant we went to last time reminded me of the fifties," my dad said. "Four types of salad and not a green leaf amongst them!"
Hmmm, in retrospect I'm being a bit mean to Port Dover. I was pretty excited to see Lake Erie for the first time, and it was nice to walk in the sand and watch the sun dipping in the sky to a cacaphony of shrieking seagulls. Plus, we ate perch and then got chocolate peanut butter ice cream on the way home.
I wanted to do an outfit shoot for this outfit because I loved it, but there wasn't time. The dress is the one from this post, just to show that although sometimes things don't crop up too often on the blog, I still wear them. Also, that no white after Labour Day rule is pure nonsense!

The first thing I thought of when I saw "Port Dover" was that old rhyming game I played as a kid, "Red Rover, Red Rover, send Carrie Right Over" - but I don't know why (except Rover and Dover) and I don't even remember what the point of the game was (I think you tried to run across some ground without getting tagged by something or other - my memory fails me). ANYWAY, loved the photos of this trip and it looks like a beautiful relaxing little spot. I could handle some time in a chair with a book and some tea in a place like that. :-) Have you already left Canada for new parts as yet unknown? Travel safe!
Ooh that looks so fun! I wanna go to the beach, ha ha. Your dad sounds funny :D
And haha, well I could always take pictures, I just never did because I hated when people watched me...so I didn't. But now I'm forcing myself :)

The port is so beautiful! Must be sad to be leaving, but pretty sure new and fun adventures are ahead for you, beautiful pictures!

Cacophony is a good word to use when talking about seagulls. It's funny how such a discordance of sound can be oddly soothing. Well, I'm sure it's the other beach-y elements that help bring that about!
Chocolate peanut butter ice cream is the best. Now I'm afraid it will be on my brain until I get some ;)
I believe you like the sea just as much as I do :)
And I love when you go around declaring rules as pure nonsense! Fantastic.
I love visiting small towns because they are so strange. Its like they get stuck in a time warp. Lovely photos and that labor day rule is rubbish.
Lovely photos, the fifties one I suppose shows the reason who we sigh over the decade, with the amazing cars and dresses.. chocolate peanut butter ice cream sounds amazing. really. Where are you off to now then ? xx
It looks beautiful! I am a sucker for small towns and beaches anywhere.
Stop by this week to see if you want to link up.

Such beautiful photos, looks like an amazing day!
It looks so pretty there! I love any lakeside or seaside little town. :) From what I can see of your outfit, you looked veeerrryyy lovely. :)
I feel like I haven't commented on your blog in a long time, which makes me feel really bad...in which case, I apologize! ♥

I love small towns. I was raised on a farm but went to school in a town of maybe 100 people and spend much of my childhood in a French community, in the middles of the prairies of around 2,000. Going back home to see the French town feels so strange as it's really only old people there now but it still seems to be booming in the summer time.
Thanks for your post. It really brought back that small town feelings again. :)
it's funny how those who were actually a apart of that era aren't so nostalgic about it. i remember being obsessed with the 70s when i was in high school and my parents were very nonchalant about it. when i would talk about the clothes my dad simply responded, that's what people wore, that's what was in style.
lovely photos and what a great canada trip you had.
i love the retro mural! elegant outfit and stunning photos as always emily :) safe home

I want to be there! Beautiful photos. I hope your trip home is safe!!
It seems to be such a calm cute little town there. As I love the taste of fish, how was the resturant?
And agree it is really interesting that people who lived in the era don't really think about it. I guess it will be the same for us in 20+ years, the clothes of 2010 and forward is not something we will look back to. More like think "oh how did I dress!?"

Wow Erie looks beautiful!
Love the photo of the birds on the beach.
There's something rather wistful about your photos of Port Dover, maybe it's the soft light. Your dad's comment about 50s food made me laugh.
Such beautiful place! :)
Kisses :*
I wonder what'll happen when young kids romanticize the era we live in now. I can't imagine that ever happening, though. I'd be like, "are you kidding? The 2000s weren't that great at all!". I wonder what clothing from now will be considered ~vintage~ in like 50 years. So weird to think!
I love such places... you can make your mind up and relax and enjoy the landscape...

I particularly like the last one with the gull flying through it.
I adore this outfit! It's perfect for late Summer and matches so sweetly with your beautiful surroundings!
Port Dover seems pretty cool!

aw, these are great pictures, they give off such a relaxed feel..
I've been meaning to check out Port Dover for years! Also, I need to catch up on your posts, because I have no idea where you're going and why you would ever wish to leave CANADA. Am I right?
The way you describe Port Dover reminds me of the town Cape Side from the old 90s show Dawson's Creek:) Your photos are so dreamy and you look stunning as always. Seeing these really makes me want to run back to the beach.

I didn't really want to leave Canada! I'd love to stay... but I also want to be in other places. If there's one thing that's difficult about the travelling life, it's always saying goodbye to places (and people) that you love.
What a pretty outfit! You're beautiful. And I adore that mural! The 50's are one of my favorite times - I especially love the cars from them! <3 *swoons*
Def a nonsense rule! Like how you wore the jacket to give it a "fall" look, although I feel ya on not wearing it back in Barcelona! Looks like such a beautiful place to just stroll around, hope your family enjoyed it more than the lunch! Thanks so all your sweet comments always too, I forget to thank you here so not sure if you see it, I truly appreciate it so much though.
Love that last picture. Looks like a charming little town.
